Mike’s Maintenance Monday: Washing your nasty helmet

MikeHere is another quick tip for the end of the season (or beginning of the cross season). I’m not sure where I picked up this idea, but I’m sure I wasn’t the first to use it. If your bike helmet is getting greasy and dirty, this is a quick, easy way to clean it with hardly any effort!

Tools you’ll need for this job:

  • Shower
  • Shampoo
  • Hair (sorry if you’re bald)

This is painfully easy and quick. Next time you take a shower, take your helmet with you. When you get to the shampoo step (which is step two in my routine), simply plop the helmet on your head that is lathered up with shampoo. Move it around a bit and scrub the straps with shampoo. Then rinse the helmet with it still on your head and when you take it off.

If your helmet was really gnarly, you might want to wash your hair a second time without the helmet…

That’s it! Pretty dang easy!

    Hey, Mike,
This is really a cool idea. Thanks. I never thought about it. All this while, after each ride we just hang our helmets out in the tropical sun hoping it would kill all the germs while drying the helmets out. Now I guess, we’ll use your method every one or two months. Again, thanks for the simple, yet great idea.
