The cleaner and better lubed your chain is the longer it will last. Ideally cleaning the chain once a week would be nice. The only way I see someone doing that is if they have a chain cleaning tool like the Park Tools CG-2 Chain Gang. Such tools make the process simple and easy. If you do get lazy make sure that you at least clean your chain after rides in bad weather that get mud or water on the chain. A couple of times a year you should completely remove your chain and give it a thorough cleaning. Remember to lube after every cleaning which will keep the chain cleaner longer.

I enjoy riding from Downtown up to Farmington via Beck Street and Bountiful, and then making my way back to SLC via the Legacy Trail.

On the other end of the valley, I like riding the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to 6200 S, and then taking Holladay Road bach home to Sugarhouse.

In Salt Lake, I love to ride the Pioneer trail starting at the Mt Dell Reservoir and going up around big mountain and into the valley below. Its a mostly straight trail with fast sections where you can go wide open. It has a good mix of climbing and descending and is a great trail once the snow clears.

I've been thinking about commuting for quite some time now, but I live probably 20 miles from work, so I've been pretty resistant to riding the train and then commuting the rest of the way. But this article really has me reconsidering. Thanks for posting it.

Paul,
Thanks for the suggestions, I think we will take your advice on doing all the basics first. We will have the first four live here in two weeks, I would love to hear what you think about them. I will get a suggestions link started so we can gather info on the requests, and get some ideas on exactly what people want to know.
Thanks a ton!
